This novel is in the form of a letter, written by the widowed Ramatoulaye and describing her struggle for survival.
The novel mariamz often used in literature classes focusing on women's roles in post-colonial Africa. So Long a Letter French: Abiola Irele called it "the most deeply felt presentation of the female condition in African fiction". So, all in all, it was definitely Goodreads doesn't have the French version of this book, but the French version is what I read.

The only good thing about this novel was that it was only 98 pages long, unfortunately it felt very much longer. Ramatoulaye is upset to learn that her husband has taken another wife, and she is also distraught at the news of his death, but in neither case does she take action. One is a mother to shield when lightning streaks the night, when thunder shakes the earth, when mud bogs one down.

Granted, there is value in choosing your battles and accepting the things that you can't change,but there are also things worth fighting for. A woman in Senegal feels betrayed when her husband takes a marama younger wife and she confides her misery to her friend who left her own husband when he took a second wife. Really just not that interesting to me.
